Accelerated Reader is a computer program which monitors
the student's independent reading practice. It is used to enhance
the reading curricula which are used in each classroom.

Students select books to read that match his/her reading ability. They read the books, perhaps several times; sometimes alone, sometimes with others. Then they take a computer based test on the book. The test is focused mostly on recall of the book and vocabulary comprehension.

Teachers, working with each student, also set reading goals for each quarter for the individual student. These goals are individualized and based on the student's needs, interests and reading ability. They are measurable goals, so that the students can see how much their reading has improved.

Reading is a skill that improves when it is practiced. The more a student reads, the more improvement is made. In national studies, reading a minimum of 20 minutes a day at home has been shown to greatly improve a student's reading ability.
