Educational Preference Survey

To: Hardin School Districts 17H & 1 Students, Parents, Staff and Community MembersFrom: Eldon C. Johnson, Superintendent Re: School Reopening Strategy/Plans – Fall 2020

Greetings Hardin School District 17H & 1 Students and Parents/Guardians,

Good afternoon...as a follow up to the District’s request for parents/guardians to complete our parent/student preference questionnaire regarding onsite, remote or hybrid instructional delivery models this coming August, I want to thank all the parents currently representing 342 students across the District for their timely response. However, this is NOT enough...it only represents approximately 20% of our student body. As we try to plan for all aspects of education to start the year and beyond, this information is VITAL to our planning process.

The questionnaire contains the following components:

• Parent/guardian name

• Detailed name of your student(s)

• The school and grade of 2020-21 enrollment

• The preferred method of instruction; onsite, a hybrid of onsite/remote learning and only remote learning

• The preferred method of transportation to/from school

We continue to ask parents/guardians to fill out ONLY ONE questionnaire per student, as duplicates have been AND will be eliminated from the survey. Please read it carefully and complete to the best of your ability. Please continue to share with those parents who may not have access or the ability to see this request. The survey NEEDS to be completed NO LATER than Sunday, July 12, 2020! This again is not a vote to determine how the school year will start, but a tool to help facilitate the District in planning for the upcoming year. Should you have additional concerns, please email those to help@hardin.k12.mt.us.

On a final note, I CANNOT stress the importance of “attending”, completing and being successful this coming 2020- 21 school year no matter what it looks like. I can guarantee that we will have systems of accountability in place to make sure that Hardin School District is providing the best educational opportunities under the guidelines established over the next seven to eight weeks. Systems of accountability will also be required of our students, not showing up to school or reporting remotely through consistent and timely procedures will not be acceptable.

Community Letter of Reopening School

To: Hardin School Districts 17H & 1 Students, Parents, Staff and Community Members From: Eldon C. Johnson, Superintendent Re: School Reopening Strategy/Plans – Fall 2020

Greetings Hardin School District 17H & 1 Students, Parents, Staff and Community Members,

I wanted to thank the 650+ respondents (representing nearly 1350 out of 1850 students) that provided us key feedback to how we should plan the many facets of the 2020-21 school year. Please find some of those key points below as well as the details of the next round of information we need.

  • Approximately over 1/3 of the respondents have someone in their household at HIGH  risk of severe illness of COVID-19.
  • That same number represents the respondents’ top fear of returning to school while roughly 20% have no concerns with returning this fall.
  • Approximately 50% of the respondents want “regular” instruction back on campus; 35% feel that a hybrid model might be better and 18% state that remote instruction is their preference.
  • Nearly 65% of the respondents have a computer/tablet...however, 35% do not have either internet access or only mobile devices.
  • If a hybrid day were to be introduced, there was no clear determination on which format (AA/BB or AB/AB) would be preferred...we will continue to research this form of delivery.

Hardin School District 17H & 1 will be putting out a new questionnaire Wednesday, July 1, 2020, asking our parents the specific following information...

  • Parent/guardian name
  • Detailed name of your student(s)
  • The school and grade of 2020-21 enrollment
  • The preferred method of instruction; onsite, a hybrid of onsite/remote learning and remote only learning
  • The preferred method of transportation to/from school

The purpose of the questionnaire is to provide some direction to the possibilities that Hardin School District may need to take in order to safely, and within current federal/state/county guidelines, educate our students this coming fall. Again, our directive at Hardin School District is to be prepared for 1) full opening of school as we always have, 2) full closure of school with remote learning and 3) a combination of both. We are asking that parents fill out ONLY ONE questionnaire per student, as duplicates will be eliminated from the survey. Please read it carefully and complete to the best of your ability. The questionnaire will come out tomorrow morning by the same format as the previous survey. Please share to those parents that did not have the ability to complete the last survey so their responses can be recorded. We are asking that the survey be completed NO LATER than July 10, 2020! The best possible scenario is that we have 100% of our students represented in this questionnaire. Should you have additional concerns, please email those to help@hardin.k12.mt.us.

On a final note, I CANNOT stress the importance of attending, fully participating and working hard to be successful this coming 2020-21 school year NO MATTER HOW IT LOOKS! I can guarantee that we will have systems of accountability in place to make sure that Hardin School District is providing the best educational opportunities under the guidelines established over the next seven to eight weeks. Systems of accountability will also be required of our students, simply not showing up to school or reporting remotely through consistent and timely procedures will not be acceptable.

Thank you and have a wonderful Fourth of July weekend, please stay safe!
