During the PIR Day in January, the Crow Agency School Immersion teachers had the opportunity to present on Dual Language. The Apsaalooke language classes has been established with dedicated teachers who spend long hours preparing for their immersion classes. There are 7 Crow Immersion teachers who are certified. The Immersion teachers that presented during the PIR Day include: Nicole Real Bird, Reva Little Owl – Not Afraid, Lavonna Little Owl- Real Bird, Clarena Hugs, and Cindy Bear Cloud. They shared their story of working to expose the children to their indigenous language in their Dual Language Immersion Preschool through 5th Grade Classrooms within a public school setting. This past weekend, selected Hardin High School students had the opportunity to go on a Buffalo Hunt in Gardiner, Montana. We didn’t see any Buffalo during this hunt but we were blessed with a couple of Elk and a great experience. Our shooters were high school teachers Scott Flat Lip and Jonathan Stands. This was a hands-on learning opportunity for students to engage with traditional food systems, encourage healthy active choices, and teach practical skills with an annual buffalo hunt. This past Friday, March 1, 2024 thru Saturday, March 2, 2024 selected Hardin High School students traveled to Gardiner, Montana. Those students were selected through an application process based on grades, behavior and attendance. This was a hands-on learning opportunity for students to engage with traditional food systems, encourage healthy active choices, and teach practical skills with an annual buffalo hunt. 2024 Hardin District Indian Club had the opportunity to perform at Eastern A Divisional Tournament at the Metra during halftime. Night Hawk Jrz sang as the dancers from each of our schools danced proudly representing our district. Jaelon Shield, the Hardin Middle School Princess held the Crow Tribal flag proudly. Thank you to everyone who made this possible: from the dancers, Night Hawk Jrz. drum group, family support, admin team, the sponsors, staff and the staff who chaperoned. Hardin Public Schools 17H & 1 in Montana have been awarded the USDA Local Food for Schools grant, an initiative aimed at bolstering local and regional food systems while supporting historically underserved and small businesses. The grant, distributed based on enrollment, provides $28,000 designated for the procurement of unprocessed or minimally processed foods sourced from Montana. This significant grant will play a vital role in Hardin Public Schools' efforts to establish and strengthen connections with Montana farmers, ranchers, distributors, and small businesses, ultimately enhancing the availability of locally sourced foods for students. The primary objective is to enrich students' meals with high-quality Montana grains, produce, meats and dairy, fostering a healthier and more sustainable dining experience. Having received the grant in November of 2023, Hardin Public Schools wasted no time in putting it to use. The first round of purchases saw a diverse array of Montana-grown foods sourced through a collaborative partnership with Western Montana Growers Cooperative and The Yellowstone Valley Food Hub in Billings. Despite the challenges of winter, Montana's agricultural bounty continues to impress. Among the locally sourced items obtained are watermelon radish and whole cabbage from Amaltheia Farm in Belgrade, field greens from Local Bounti in Hamilton, and apples from Swanson's Mountainview Orchards in Ravalli County. Additionally, fresh organic eggs from Mission Mountain Organic Eggs in Ronan, as well as carrots and beets from Harlequin Produce in Arlee, were procured. Bison from Montrail in Ronan and lentils from Timeless Seeds in Conrad, round out the impressive selection. Hardin Public Schools, located in Crow Agency and Hardin, boast a total of seven schools serving nearly 2,000 students. Recognized as a Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) school, they offer free meals to all students under the National School Lunch Act. Under the guidance of Director of Nutrition Marlo Spreng and Farm to School Director Elle Ross, fresh, healthy food remains a top priority in Hardin. Their adept utilization of grant funds underscores their commitment to improving school meals, enhancing meal access, and promoting nutritional education in the classroom.
